ThriveAgric, Acorn-Rabobank Partner to Empower 30,000+ Smallholder Farmers with Carbon Credit Access

We are excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership with Acorn-Rabobank! This collaboration aims to empower over 30,000 smallholder farmers across 9 Nigerian states while combating climate change.

Through the partnership, the sequestration of 1.3 million Metric Tons of CRUs will be facilitated and over $50 million in carbon credit revenue generated.

What’s the need for this partnership?

Currently, Africa generates only an estimated 2% of its maximum annual carbon credit potential, with 30% of this potential lying within the agricultural sector. However, several deforestation activities have hampered the global green initiative causing conflict, increased drought, and climate-related calamities. As a domino effect, this results in high pre- and post-harvest losses, decreasing food availability, and bringing the proportion of hungry people to 17 million in 2022. Hence the need to embark on initiatives to drive sustainable agriculture practices to provide adequate support for farmers and impact rural communities.

By taking this holistic approach to agricultural development that addresses environmental, economic, and social challenges while promoting long-term sustainability and resilience in farming communities. Smallholder farmers in communities across  Kaduna, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Jigawa, Niger, Nassarawa, and Kano states can receive additional income from carbon credit and other climate-smart benefits on the initiative. The farmlands of these farmers will be regenerated and climate change mitigated through key low-carbon options such as agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, agricultural technology and other initiatives.

These will improve soil health, increase crop productivity, reduce the impact of climate related shocks on post harvest, enhance carbon sequestration, promote biodiversity, and provide economic benefits to local communities.

Here's the exciting part: you can be one of them!

What's this partnership all about?

This initiative focuses on providing access to carbon credits. But what exactly are carbon credits?

Our planet faces a major challenge: climate change. In simple terms, trees absorb carbon dioxide, a gas contributing to climate change. By adopting sustainable practices like planting trees, farmers can help capture carbon from the atmosphere. This "carbon sequestration" is valuable, and farmers can earn extra income by selling carbon credits that represent this captured carbon.

Why participate? How does this benefit farmers and the environment?

This partnership offers a wealth of benefits. It’s a win-win for participating Nigerian farmers and the environment because you:

  • Earn additional income: Sell carbon credits and boost your income alongside your regular produce sales.
  • Improve your farm: Sustainable practices promoted by the program can lead to healthier soil and better crop yields.
  • Combat climate change: Play a vital role in mitigating climate change by adopting eco-friendly practices.

More than just carbon credits

The program goes beyond just carbon. Here's what else you can expect:

  • Gain valuable knowledge: ThriveAgric and Acorn-Rabobank will provide training and support in sustainable farming practices.
  • Increase farm resilience: Sustainable practices can help your farm better withstand droughts, floods, and other climate challenges.

A Holistic Approach to a Sustainable Future

This partnership tackles environmental, economic, and social challenges faced by Nigerian farmers. By promoting sustainable practices, the program aims to create long-term benefits for farming communities and the environment.
